The test
What is a smear test?
A cervical smear test (now called a cervical screening test) involves taking a small sample of cells from the cervix to check for the presence of high-risk strains of HPV (human papillomavirus) and any abnormal cell changes that could, if left untreated, develop into cervical cancer. The test takes just a few minutes.

What does a smear test tell us?
Cervical screening detects HPV infection and abnormal cervical cells at an early stage — often long before any symptoms appear. Early detection allows for monitoring or treatment before any abnormality progresses to cancer. It is not a test for cancer itself, but rather a highly effective tool for preventing it.
